If Candidates have previously attended and passed an ADR Initial Course and are in possession of a current ADR Driver Training Card then they can attend a Refresher Course.
An ADR Driver Training Card is valid for five years from the date of issue. This can be extended during the final twelve months of validity for a further period of five years, from the date of expiry, by the holder undertaking and passing the appropriate refresher training and examinations.
To ensure that the examinations can be marked and card issued prior to current expiry date by SQA, the Candidate must have a minimum of two weeks until expiry left on their licence on the last day of the refresher course date.
Candidates for refresher training may only receive training on the modules covered by their existing ADR Driver Training Certificate.
For non-UK ADR Driver Training Certificate holders sitting refresher training, a copy of their current ADR Driver Training Certificate must be submitted to SQA prior to the training course and as early as possible. This is to ensure the correct expiry date and entitlement are transferred to their refreshed ADR Driver Training Certificate. If successful, a refresher candidate will be issued with an ADR Driver Training Card valid for five years from the expiry date of their current certificate.
Exams are additional and are priced at £15 per module. There is a minimum of 3 exams (core plus either packages or tanker, or both, plus at least one class module) and maximum of 10 exams. Some exams can be grouped together for cost-effectiveness. Please read more in our FAQ section below to determine eligibility. Our Guidance Video below will also help you to determine the exams that you need to book.
Candidates will be able to have up to 14 hours of “non Driver CPC-approved” ADR training uploaded to their Driver CPC record during one 5 year period.
Course Cancellation: No refund will be made for any candidate who fails to attend or does not complete the course. Cancellations or changes must be made within a specified timeframe before the course date, otherwise full fees will be charged and no refund will be made. The cancellation policy for this course is 5 working days prior to the course start date.

The carriage of dangerous goods by road has inherent risks and dangers. ADR training for drivers aims to reduce the hazards to themselves and to other road users by following industry guidelines and health and safety legislation.
Candidates who have held an ADR Driver Training Certificate for a minimum of four years can attend refresher training. To ensure that the examinations can be marked and card issued prior to current expiry date by SQA, the Candidate must have a minimum of two weeks until expiry left on their licence on the last day of the refresher course date. If successful, the candidate's expiry date will be five years from the current expiry date. Candidates for refresher training may only receive training on the modules covered by their existing ADR Driver Training Certificate.
Alternatively, a candidate can attend refresher training more than twelve months before the date of expiry of their existing certificate and a new ADR Driver Training Certificate will be issued. However, the expiry date will be five years from the exam date, not five years from current date of expiry.
Yes you can add classes to your current ADR certificate. You can do this by attending the relevant training course and passing the exams. A new ADR Driver Training Certificate will be issued with the same date of expiry as the original. The additions will only be valid until this date and can be refreshed along with the other classes at the appropriate time.
If you want to refresh all of the existing classes that you hold, you can work out how many exams you need to sit by looking at the back of your existing ADR card. You will need one exam per class. Don't forget to add one on for the 'core' module, which is automatic and isn't explicitly shown on the card.
