Periodic training is essential continuing professional development for bus, coach, lorry and taxi drivers. It helps confirm and expand drivers’ existing knowledge and skills, keeping them updated with ever-changing legislation.

Driver CPC Regulations

The Vehicle Drivers (Certificates of Professional Competence) Regulations, effective since 2007, were introduced following the Driver CPC EU Directive of 2003. These regulations affect all professional Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) and Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) drivers. New drivers must obtain an initial Driver CPC qualification and then undertake ongoing training thereafter.

All professional drivers, both new and existing, must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years to maintain their Driver CPC. Only courses approved and delivered by a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) accredited training centre count towards this requirement.

Northern Ireland Taxi Driver Training

Northern Ireland’s taxi driver periodic training scheme, introduced in September 2015, is similar to the Driver CPC for lorry and bus drivers but with different rules and modules. Key points include:

  • Taxi drivers licensed on or after 1st September 2015 must complete 35 hours of training every five years.
  • Existing taxi drivers’ training hours vary based on their licence renewal date.
  • Training must include at least one 3.5-hour Disability Awareness course.
  • Failure to complete the required training will result in non-renewal of the taxi driver licence.

Driver CPC and Taxi Periodic Training are recorded separately, however, some courses are valid for both qualifications. Our course descriptions will state which qualifications they are valid for. Please see all modules below.

TTS is approved by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency to deliver Driver CPC training. Note: JAUPT has become part of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and is now called the DVSA Training Accreditation team.
